About S/J League

Quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Students Association in Japan (PPIJ) Kumamoto prefecture, the S/J League is a badminton event between clubs in Japan, where the players competing are top class Japanese players.


The meaning of the name and vision of the S/J League


The letter S in S/J League is taken from the words Shuttle, Support, Smash, Success, and Speed.

Shuttle is a symbol of badminton.

Support is support from fans to all athletes.

Smash is a blow that is done quickly.

Success means that this league aims to find athletes who are successful and become role models for many people.

Speed ​​means that the speed ball of the game in badminton is the fastest in the world.


The / (slash) symbol in S/J League represents the sense of speed in badminton, and is to differentiate it from the league names of other competitive organizations.


The letter J in S/J League is taken from the word 'Japan', with a vision to become a leader in the league of Asian badminton powers such as China, as well as Malaysia and Indonesia.


The S/J League's vision is to play a role in the development of Japanese badminton.


 The origins of the S/J League


Badminton S/J League is Japan's highest league competition between domestic business teams which started in 1979 as 日本リーグ (Japan League). This tournament consists of men's teams and women's teams.


On September 17, 2015, the Badminton Japan League announced that they were accepting fan suggestions for a new name for the Badminton Japan League.

The number of proposals reached 5442 names. Many fans have suggested names starting with the letter 'S', some of which are Smash, Speed, and Shuttle.


After various considerations, the new name for the Badminton Japan League is S/J League. The tournament with the name S/J League started in 2016.


Explanation of the S/J League tournament


In the S/J League badminton tournament, 12 men's teams and 12 women's teams will compete in team competitions which are divided into several leagues: Men's S Block League, Men's J Block League, Women's S Block League, and Women's J Block League.


The winners and 2nd place men and women from the S Block and J Block Leagues will advance to the TOP 4 tournament and aim to win the championship. Many Japanese national team players will also participate in this tournament.


Apart from the S/J League, there is also S/J League II and S/J League III for clubs that are not included in the S/J League.


The winner of S/J League II will be able to compete in the S/J League the following year.


The winners of the last edition of S/J League II (2023/2024) who will compete in the S/J League this time are Daido Tokushuko (men's team) and Resonac (women's team).


The current edition of the S/J League competition (2024/2025) will be held in several cities in Japan from November 2, 2024 to February 22, 2025.


The following clubs will participate in the 2024/2025 S/J League season:


 ✅ Men


S Block: Kanazawa Gakuin Club, NTT East, JTEKT, Tokai Kogyo, Hitachi Information and Communication Engineering, Daido Tokushuko (promoted from S/J League II).


J Block: Consadole, Tonami Transportation, Tricky Panders, Mitsubishi Motors Kyoto, BIPROGY, Toyota Tsusho.


 ✅ Women


S Block: Hokuto Bank, Sanin Godo Bank, Gifu Bluvic, NTT East, BIPROGY, Resonac (promoted from S/J League II).


J Block: 77 Bank, Saishunkan Seiyakusho, ACT SAIKYO, Hiroshima Gas, PLENTY GLOBAL LINX, YONEX.


Order of play in the S/J League


Order of play in the S/J League starts with a doubles sector match, continues with a singles sector, and finally the doubles sector returns with different players from the initial match.


Men's Teams: First men's doubles, men's singles and second men's doubles.

Women's teams: First women's doubles, women's singles and second women's doubles.
